COLUMBUS, OHIO — Ohio Republicans are taking action to protect the integrity of every Ohioan’s vote, and the Ohio Republican Party is all in.
On Monday, May 18, Republican House and Senate lawmakers introduced a constitutional amendment that would require a photo ID to vote at the polls, locking Ohio’s strong voter ID law directly into the state constitution where activist courts and future legislatures cannot quietly tear it down.
Two Republican leaders deserve a spotlight for their work on this. Vivek Ramaswamy, ORP-Endorsed Candidate for Governor, published a column in the Cincinnati Enquirer calling on the Legislature to act, and threw his full weight behind the amendment. State Rep. Adam Bird (R, New Richmond) helped drive the constitutional amendment to make sure Ohio’s voter ID protections cannot be reversed in the future.
Said Ramaswamy, “Too often, this issue has been politicized in other contests, but Ohio has an opportunity to show America how it’s done, through decisive constitutional action adopted directly by voters, adopted in a unifying manner rather than through division.”
Representative Bird, who helped get the amendment off the ground, put it plainly: “You get concerned that Ohio law can change a lot easier than the constitution can change. We want to make sure what we’re doing is going to be there to protect Ohioans’ votes in the future.”
Voter ID is not a controversial idea. A 2025 Pew Research poll found that 83% of Americans support requiring a government-issued photo ID to vote, including 95% of Republicans and 71% of Democrats. Ohioans agree, and so do we.
With Republican supermajorities in both the Ohio House and Ohio Senate, this amendment can clear the Legislature and go straight to the voters of Ohio for the final word. That is exactly how it should be.
