COLUMBUS, OHIO — State Representative Adam Mathews is making the case in the pages of the Columbus Dispatch, publishing a letter to the editor that argues supporting Amy Acton for Governor is “simply incompatible with church teaching” — and that Vivek Ramaswamy is the clear pro-life choice for Ohio’s Catholics and families.
The letter, published July 20, 2026, was written by State Representative Adam Mathews of Lebanon, Ohio — a Catholic and St. Xavier High School alumnus. Mathews writes that he is enthusiastically voting for Ramaswamy, a fellow Catholic and St. Xavier alumnus, for Ohio Governor.
Mathews draws a sharp contrast rooted in the COVID era. In his letter, he points out that under the orders Acton oversaw, county fairs, homecoming dances, and hospital visits were banned — yet Ohio’s abortion clinics remained open after a legal challenge. For Mathews, that contrast is disqualifying. He argues that abortion is the pre-eminent issue for Catholic voters, citing the U.S. bishops’ own guidance directly: “The threat of abortion remains our pre-eminent priority because it directly attacks our most vulnerable and voiceless brothers and sisters and destroys more than a million lives per year in our country alone.”
On Ramaswamy’s pro-life credentials, Mathews notes that Vivek is one of only five gubernatorial candidates in the country endorsed by Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America — arguing that the selectivity of that endorsement demonstrates it is not merely a partisan rubber stamp.
Mathews also makes an economic case for Ramaswamy, writing that cutting Ohio’s income tax would help the state reclaim its role as the Midwest’s economic engine — and noting that Ohio’s sales tax already exempts nearly all necessities. He closes his letter with a call to action, writing that Vivek’s vision would create “a state of excellence.”
Mathews’s letter puts the choice in stark terms for Catholic voters weighing the Governor’s race. As he writes plainly in the Dispatch: for Catholic voters guided by their faith and the bishops’ teaching, the choice is Vivek Ramaswamy.
