COLUMBUS - Democrat candidate Sen. John Boccieri scrambled yesterday to reverse his previous position and cover up his initial tolerance of Marc Dann's severe misconduct. Unfortunately for Boccieri, his quick turnaround highlights the clear contradiction in his two statements and proves Boccieri was perfectly willing to overlook Dann's unethical and improper behavior:
"John Boccieri flipped so quickly on Marc Dann, it's enough to give you whiplash. One second he's saying it's a completely personal matter and Dann didn't do anything wrong. The next second he claims he's outraged by the dishonor Dann brought to the office. The only thing we can really be sure of is that Boccieri knows which way the political wind is blowing or he probably wouldn't know what his position is. No matter how quickly he flips positions, John Boccieri can't hide the fact that he was perfectly fine letting Marc Dann off the hook for his offensive, unethical conduct," said Ohio Republican Party Spokesman John McClelland.
Boccieri on Saturday: "It's a personal matter as long as there were no criminal or ethical standards crossed," he said. "Clearly with the others, there were ethical and criminal issues that are pretty serious." (Paul Kostyu, "Attorney General Admits Affair, Refuses to Resign," The Canton Repository, 5/3/08)
Boccieri on Monday: "I am outraged that the Attorney General of the state of Ohio has neglected the duty and honor of public service. The cronyism and lack of attentiveness to protocol and detail in Attorney General Dann's hiring practices has led us to this tragic moment in Ohio's history." ("Comments Regarding Calls for Ohio Attorney General to Resign," The Associated Press, 5/5/08)
