Obama and Clinton supporters prefer McCain in November

COLUMBUS - According to a recent survey conducted by the Gallup Organization, nearly 3 out of 10 supporters of Hillary Clinton would support John McCain in the fall election if she is not successful in winning her party's nomination. Nearly 2 out of 10 Obama supporters said they would opt for McCain over Clinton if Obama is not successful. Ohio Republican Party Deputy Chairman Kevin DeWine today released the following statement in reaction:

"John McCain's cross-party appeal is further proof that Republicans are well-positioned to win Ohio in November," said DeWine. "Voters of all political persuasions continue to see John McCain as a man of character with the experience and leadership necessary to be president."

The survey goes on to suggest that "the continuing and sometimes fractious Democratic nomination fight could have a negative impact for the Democratic Party in next November's election." (Frank Newport, "If McCain vs. Obama, 28% of Clinton Backers Go for McCain," Gallup, 3/26/08)
